I have been extremely inactive in this circle over recent months as I have also slipped into being inactive in music again. But today is the first day of a change in pace [for 2 weeks anyway]. I am currently typing with one hand as I have a six week old kitten [1 of 5] being entertained by the other to stop it from jumping on my laptop. [the cat consequently named this track]. I am house sitting in Dorchester for a couple of weeks and plan much more time for music, practice and rest. A little work, no extractions; tv etc, and little chance of socializing.

So day one on this break and a first offering to the circle. And my first attempts with Apple Logic – I installed before I left home. I haven’t looked into learning how it works yet; i just opened it, added a track and pressed record. It seemed to work without me even looking at the setup so I decided to simply record a piece.

This is an improvisation of three instruments. I have first recorded a Piano track, then while listening to it back, recorded a percussion track, then a guitar track. Each track recorded with the laptop’s mic, then without adjustment, exported using the ‘bounce’ button. At this level – very simple. The drums are Steve’s lovely kit played delicately with my hands. The guitar is an archtop electric without amplification. The Piano is the front room’s upright.

The layered improvisations started with the enjoyment of holding chords on the piano until the sounds died to nothing. A comment I read a few years back has repeated in my thoughts while considering the properties of different instruments and how you naturally work with them as a player: The idea was that the guitar is a blues instrument because the notes die out so quickly. It is tragic.

We recorded this in a very militant fashion, just to prove that we had a collection of songs that are nearing ready for performance. It was again recorded on the internal mic on my laptop, but we’ve almost perfected the balances and room placement, etc. There’s also some vocals, but they’re fairly rough at the moment - singing with music all around your head, with no space for hearing the music in your head, is harder than it seems. Anyway, these are the most complete songs we’ve got so far, even if a couple of them need more work. There are mistakes and happy accidents along the way, but I think we’re going to attempt a more fluid style in playing the songs in public. Anything goes in our sessions - we never tell each other what to do, but come across some interesting sounds because of this. I love my band.

Here’s an idea I had about learning the fundamentals of a world music and applying it to more Western styles. I did it as a tutorial, but I’m quite proud of the results. The idea was to learn about Latin Percussion, which is represented in the first track ‘Latin Beat.’ Latin music, I found out, was based around a 3-2 (or 2-3) pattern on two short, fat wooden stick called claves. Everything else, including the trio of conga drums (tumba, conga and quinto), plays around the clave, leading into and out of the accented rhythm. From there, I applied the same theories to Techno, Breakbeat and Trip Hop, either mimicking the patterns of Latin music or using the instruments in an unconventional setting. Anyway, here’s the results. Let me know what you think.

This will be the last SeeBeeOne post for a while, until we record something properly over the summer. This post is a bit of a strange one because, after discussing whether we need a bassist or not over the last few months, one fell out of the sky a couple of weekends ago. It was a bright sunny day two Sunday’s ago, if you remember, and so there we were jamming away with the windows open. After three tracks, our drummer’s housemate informs us that we have a fan outside. Our pianist pops his head out of the window. It’s a large guy in a muscle vest with a case. ‘You need bass?’ he asks. ‘You play?’ asks Dave. ‘Yeah, I got bass now,’ he says. So that was that, up comes our new buddy to lay down some low frequencies. His language is no good whatsoever (he’s from Slovakia, apparently), so it’s a bit of a struggle until we decide to just let the music talk. We start playing, and this guy is good, very good. And here are some of the best results from the couple of hours we got with him. So, now you really get to decide whether we need bass or not. I think, on hearing these results, that we do NOT. Nothing against this guy’s playing (he was superb throughout), but we sound more like a generic funk band with a bass involved, whereas we were sounding much more original beforehand. Anyway, not wanting to taint your opinions any further, here you go . . .
